Kateri Tekakwitha

Lily of the Mohawks
1656-1680

After smallpox devastated Ossernenon and the first Caughnawaga, Takakwitha's clan moved across the Mohawk River to build another Caughnawaga. Tekakwitha lived here from around 1660 through 1667. On Easter Sunday 1667, Tekakwitha was baptized Kateri Tekakwitha by the Jesuit Father de Lamberville, the mission church of St-Pierre. Those present were touched by the modest joy radiating from Kateri. She suffered many humiliations at the hands of her family and other members of her clan. Finally in 1667, Father de Lamberville convinced Kateri to escape to the "Village of praying Indians", Kahnawaké, in Canada.
